Starting a Meditation Habit (& Sticking to It!)

With the infinite distractions that are available in our human lives today, it's easier than ever to stay disconnected from who you truly are. At the same time, everywhere we turn, experts and professionals everywhere are advocating for meditation as a simple and effective solution with the answers to most, if not all, of our problems. The healing power of meditation is undeniable, but the sticking point for so many is actually sitting (or lying) down and doing it!

So how do you DO IT and how do you make it a part of your life in this busy world?

First of all, I just want to say that meditation is individual and part of a bigger process of increasing awareness. Personally, I don’t force myself to accomplish anything other than just BEING and BREATHING. There are many ways to get into it, it all depends what makes it click for you, and it's totally normal to be distracted, especially at first. Simply pick something to help you focus again - either on your breathing by counting or saying "inhale... exhale" silently, or focusing on the voice in the guided meditation, a mantra, etc.

I started out by just sticking around after yoga classes and prolonging my savasana (especially after long restorative classes), it was then that I began to seek that connected feeling more often and decided to download a meditation app and try out various guided meditations on YouTube. All those are really great tools for beginners and an awesome preparation for creating your own practice. Try out different type of meditations to figure out which ones get you feeling the best.

Pick a regular time EACH DAY where you know you can dedicate even just 2-5 minutes to yourself, to embark on this journey, with no distractions or interruptions. This means you may need to take a few precautions to make sure you’re consistent with it! I know I definitely need reminders and accountability... And it’s important to set yourself up right! If you have a planner, pick a time that works every single day. I like to “bookend” my days with spiritual work - getting in the vortex - momentum stops in your sleep. If you don’t have a planner, use your phone and laptop to mark it down and set an alarm on your phone for the same time each day. This is supposed to be fun, but it’s also a lifestyle change so you need to push yourself a little bit to get a boat load of positive results.

Remember, don't get tripped up on missing a day or a week. Every day is the perfect day to refocus and recommit... And for those days that you’re short on time, 2 minutes is better than nothing! Even one inhale and exhale with your eyes closed has MAJOR benefits.

It all comes down to setting your day up from a place of truth and connection. It’s the easiest way to reconnect with your higher self, align with the non-physical part of you and raise your vibration. We all know that raising our vibration is the only way to manifest our true selves and all our desires!
